A number of arrests have been made following a protest in central London today.
The Met had issued a reminder to those attending the demonstration in the Aldwych area that strict regulations introduced by the Government remained in place to help prevent the spread of Coronavirus.
A new strain of coronavirus may be fuelling the rapid rise in infections in London and the southeast, the health secretary warned today as he placed the capital under the toughest level of restrictions.
Matt Hancock told MPs that there was “not a moment to spare” as he put London, most of Essex and part of Hertfordshire in Tier 3, meaning hospitality businesses must close.
He also suggested that people avoid Christmas shopping in Oxford Street and elsewhere. Cases have been doubling in seven days and Mr Hancock said there was an “inexorable link” to more hospitalisations and deaths. The tougher rules will take effect on Wednesday.
